Tax dips
Beginning in 2013, many of Georgia’s local governments started seeing downward trends in tax collections, causing local budget-makers some concern. The causes of local tax dips are hard to pinpoint, but some are pointing to the GATE, or Georgia Agriculture Tax Exemption.
A new grant-funded collaboration between the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Fort Valley State University, AgSouth Farm Credit and Georgia Organics will provide training to beginning farmers in Georgia to help them build their farms into sustainable and profitable businesses. Pesticides can be helpful in controlling insects and diseases, but there are chemicals that should be handled with care. To educate pesticide users, University of Georgia Extension has planned pesticide safety and handling classes in Albany, Savannah and Perry this February and March.

AgrAbility Program

Farm Bill Meetings
A free series of educational meetings to teach farmers and landowners about the 2014 Farm Bill have been set for December.
Lettuce, a high-value cash crop, was among the highest yielding crops in a University of Georgia organic trial incorporating cover crops into a high-intensive crop rotation model at a UGA farm in Watkinsville, GA. The crop yielded a net return of over $9,000 per acre over the three-year study period. CAES News

Organic vegetable farmers in the Southeast now have a successful model for planting summer cover crops with high-value, cool-season crops, thanks to a University of Georgia study. The two models use a series of crop rotations to increase yields, control insects and diseases, improve crop quality and build soil biomass.

Pesticide Collection Day
Georgia residents can safely dispose of old pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers and other chemicals at the Clean Day, set for Thursday, Nov. 12, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Brooks County Extension office in Quitman, Georgia.
