Safety Seats Save Kids
In 1996 in Georgia, 32 children under age 5 died in auto accidents. Of those, only 12 were in properly installed child restraints. A University of Georgia specialist said car safety seats are the best way to protect children riding in any vehicle. "Using seat belts and child restraints increases your chances of surviving an accident by almost 60 percent," said Randall Townley.

Soaring fresh produce prices have many shoppers pushing their carts to the frozen and canned food aisles at their grocery store. A University of Georgia nutrition specialist said frozen and canned foods may be the better nutritional bargains anyway. "Many people prefer fresh fruits and vegetables. Pecan Planting Time
February is the best month to plant pecan trees in Georgia. Nursery trees are usually available from mid-January to the end of March. Shifting meat prices may give consumers a bargain on pork this year while beef prices rise slightly, said a University of Georgia economist. "Increasing pork supplies and decreasing beef supplies will affect both meats at the supermarket," said John McKissick.

Georgia farmers haven't given up yet on their 1997 cotton and soybean crops. But unrelenting fall and now winter rains are taking their toll. University of Georgia agricultural scientists say many fields will never be picked. "I've seen pickers and planters running in the same field before.
