2022 Horse Quiz Bowl
On Jan. 29, the State 4-H Horse Quiz Bowl contest gathered teams from across Georgia for a spirited match in which buzzers were hot and stakes were high. Madison County’s senior team took home first place and Alyssa Goldman, Georgia Kane, Clayton Adams and Elise Parks became the newest Master 4-H’ers in the Georgia 4-H program. The team was coached by Madison County volunteers Shannon McBridge and Sophia Merka.

4-H Horsemanship
After COVID restrictions forced the cancellation of the annual event last year, 69 Georgia 4-H youth joined 4-H’ers from nine southern states to compete at the five-day Southern Regional 4-H Horse Championship event held in Perry, Georgia.

To determine the quality of hay, Georgia farmers trust forage tests from the University of Georgia Agricultural and Environmental Services Laboratories in Athens, Georgia. The lab provides an estimate of Relative Forage Quality (RFQ). This value is a single, easy-to-interpret number that improves a producer's understanding of forage quality and helps to establish a fair market value for the product. CAES News

Hay and baleage producers in the Southeast have a chance at winning cash and major equipment prizes in the 2016 Southeastern Hay Contest presented by Massey Ferguson. The Southeastern Hay Contest is held in conjunction with the Sunbelt Ag Expo, the South’s premier outdoor farm show.

Carleen Porter, a fourth year Animal Science major spent eight weeks at the University of Perugia Veterinary School in Perugia, Italy, fulfilling the internship requirement for the International Agriculture Certificate. How did you decide on this program? Last spring, I was going to be part of a UGA-sponsored program in Verona for three months. I contacted Amanda Stephens (CAES Associate Director of Student Engagement) about adding on the certificate internship. Amanda was able to work with the UGA veterinary school to secure a veterinary internship at the University of Perugia.

Farmgate Value Report
Led by increases in forestry and livestock values, Georgia’s agricultural output increased by $484 million in 2014, making agriculture, once again, the largest industry in the state with a value of $14.1 billion. According to the most recent University of Georgia Farmgate Value Report, published earlier this month, the value of Georgia’s livestock and aquaculture industries increased by almost 36 percent from 2013.

Horse owners will get the latest research-based information on how to care for their animals at the 10th annual University of Georgia Horse Owner’s Seminar and Trade Show set for Aug. 15 at the UGA Livestock Arena in Athens, Georgia.
World Cup rider Melanie Smith Taylor is one of only two riders to ever win the “Triple Crown of Show Jumping.” She is the only rider to win the American Invitational, the International Jumping Derby and the American Gold Cup on the same horse, Calypso who is shown with her in the photo. CAES News

TaylorMade Horsemanship Clinic has been set for Sept. 6-7 at the University of Georgia’s Livestock Instructional Arena in Athens. The clinic will tentatively be held from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day. Preregistration is required.
